Without a doubt, the most ubiquitous gadget for the past two years now are the Apple iPods. This is the one gizmo that not only successfully brought MP3 technology to the masses it also made white the most fashionable colour in electronic equipment.
The power of the small white box is so undeniable that die-hards wait on every single word that comes out of Steve Jobs mouth in the hopes that he will announce the latest and greatest iteration of the iPod.
2005 was a banner year for the iPod because not only did Apple release the impossibly small iPod Nano, it also released the fifth generation iPod with video capabilities (a feature Jobs has firmly said the iPod will never possess).
But if the buzz and rumours circulating among Apple diehards, iPod fanatics and tech heads are proven to be true, then 2006 may just trump ’05.
And the rumour? Well just a WiFi capable iPod.
Based on certain movements in the industry, this rumour could well be true. Recently PortalPlayer, an Apple iPod supplier, announced that it plans to acquire a small private wireless technology firm and also said that it will be dedicating 2006 to building WiFi network. This, according to experts, suggests that Apple is considering adding wireless features to future iPod models.
I’d like to see a WiFi enabled iPod because it will really make sharing my MP3s within the home so much easier. For a big music fan, this is the best news since, well, the iPod.
