Cheap WiFi – the alternative to free WiFi

There has been much talk on plans for local governments to set up free WiFi networks that span their whole cities or municipalities. However, some consider this to be a pipe dream—after all, it is quite difficult to set up since WiFi access points are, by nature, short-range and low-powered unlike other technologies like cellular (which only requires one cell site per certain number of square miles).

So what’s a WiFi junkie to do? I’m a road warrior, and yet I find it difficult to work out of the office (or out of my home office, which is the case) since hotspots can be hard to come by in my city. My usual recourse is the local Starbucks or any other coffee house that has WiFi. I do have an unlimited account with one of the larger public WiFi network providers.

But as things are, I still find Starbucks expensive because I’d have to make a purchase every time I want to access the network. Or rather, I don’t exactly need to make a purchase to connect to the network, but it would be too shameful of me to just sit inside their shop without buying anything.

So I’ve come up with a nifty little solution to my problem.
