Latency woes

March 4th, 2006 · No Comments

The past couple of days, I wrote on speed concerns with WiFi. Yes, you get 54 Megabits per second from your computer to your network, but then again, with a slow connection to the outside world (a.k.a. the Internet), that won’t help much, will it? So your connection speed is still highly dependent on how fast your broadband Internet connection is.

Right now I’m having coffee at a local café and I was supposed to be catching up on my news online (as well as posting on my blogs), but things are just so difficult with the network’s latency. It was great an hour ago, but things seem to be bogging down. My signal’s excellent, and the network speed is a full 11 Mbps (the hotspot seems to be using WiFi B). But I have to wait a full minute or so before the network responds to my access request, and another minute before my websites are loaded!

And I thought latency was only a problem with the cellular-type wireless networks! I guess in a while I’ll have to leave, probably to look for a more decent WiFi hotspot. Or maybe I’ll just head home. At this rate, dialup is better! The latency is killing me!
