A few weeks ago, a friend asked me if he could borrow my unlimited WiFi access for a while. And I agreed. Actually, I’m not really using my account with one of the larger hotspot providers at my place all the time, so I have no qualms with sharing it with friends. After all, it’s an unlimited account, and I got it for dirt cheap along with my DSL subscription (less than ten bucks for half a year).
Aside from sharing my login username and password, I’ve also shared my home WiFi network to anyone interested in connecting. Though I don’t have that many friends within the neighborhood, I have several online contacts who pass by my street and sometimes stop over at one of the small restaurants across the road. I even made friends along the way (I blogged about my “free” WiFi before). It’s just a matter of sharing my WEP key.
Some may find this unthinkable, but for me, I trust my friends to use my WiFi network sparingly. After all, how much bandwidth does one really need if a bit of Web surfing and email access is all that’s needed? So guys, don’t be selfish with your wireless networks.
