Apple’s venerable iPod took the world by storm when it first gave the world a cool platform for playing music on the go. While the iPod wasn’t the first portable music player around, it was considered to be the device that revolutionized the way people played—and purchased—music. The iPod has defined personal tastes, and has created a sub-culture in itself, where fanatics are known to have dedicated their lives to revolve around playing music on their iPods, and businesses have focused creating accessories and add-ons for the portable media player.
Next thing Apple gave us was iPod with photos. While not really a big jump, this capitalized on the colored screens the higher-end iPods had. Then just recently, Apple announced video capabilities on the latest iPods! This came as bad news—really bad news—for other companies that made portable media players. With Apple’s strong branding, they’re sure to get a big chunk off the portable video industry with the iPod video. Apple has even started selling videos on its iTunes store, including episodes of popular TV series such as Lost and CSI, talk shows, and even movie trailers.
Now imagine if you add WiFi capabilities to the iPod, and set this up to work with wide-area (municipal or city-wide) wireless networks.
