WiFi gizmos for Christmas

December 14th, 2005 · No Comments

I love the Christmas season. Everything about it makes me so excited. The cold weather. The prospect of receiving gifts (yes, I appreciate even fruit cakes). But as a techie, one of the things I love about the Christmas season is that many companies release their newest gadgets and gizmos during this month in a bid to attract the eyes and the pockets of people looking for gifts and stocking stuffers.

With WiFi such a big buzzword among tech circles and gadget heads, I was expecting to see a lot of new equipment where WiFi capabilities have been bundled in. The cool thing about this is that you wouldn’t expect WiFi connectivity
in some of the new electronic equipment that has been coming out this season.

Take for example the digital camera. I know that the Wlan connectivitiy is for printing wirelessly and transferring files from the camera to a PC. But is it really necessary? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. I just find it a bit strange – and yes, a little amusing (you sure wouldn’t want to go online using a digital teeny-weeny digicam). Anyway, Kodak has already released its first WiFi-enabled camera, while Nikon has released two models of its WiFi digital cameras. Canon is not far behind with its own camera model with WiFi features

Another nifty idea for WiFi integration is the WiFi enabled TV set. Philips has done it with its newest Aquos TV model, which has native WiFi features on top of its PVR.

These are developments I surely welcome. I jut hope I’ve been good enough to receive one of these nifty equipment.
