WiFi iPods coming soon?

February 14th, 2006 · No Comments

Rumors have been circulating that the iPod will soon have WiFi and Bluetooth support. While still unconfirmed, even the manufacturers for the iPod’s digital signal processing chipset (the equivalent of a CPU) has hinted that the next generation of the chip will eventually have inherent WiFi and Bluetooth support, and this means WiFi iPods are not far behind.

What will this mean for iPod enthusiasts? Bluetooth support is but the next step in having freedom of mobility, with wireless earphones. But WiFi capability is most likely to be the highlight, and is touted to be the next big thing in mobile multimedia. With WiFi being a popular feature in home and office networking, iPod owners are likely to enjoy wireless syncing of media with their home computers. The more exciting possibility is the ability to purchase or download music and videos straight from the iPod, through public WiFi hotspots!

This can change the television industry overnight, as iPod users get to enjoy video-on-demand on their handy little devices. While the iPod’s screen is small—definitely not comparable to a full-sized television screen—the sheer brand recognition of Apple is sure to bring in a lot of users into the system.

If WiFi iPods do materialize, then this is yet another good revenue stream for Apple!
